Demand for Electric Vehicle Bearings Drives Innovation
We wrote about seeing an increased demand for bearings back in 2018. That was six years ago, and demand is still soaring with no end in sight. According to a recent article in Fortune Business Insights, the global bearings market is projected to grow from $43.98 billion in 2023 to $77.90 billion by 2030.
The automotive industry is driving the bulk of the demand, just as it did in 2018. What’s changed since then, however, is the type of bearings this industry needs. This is due to the increased production of Electronic Vehicles (EVs).
In traditional internal combustion vehicles, bearing requirements are largely driven by their need to endure high temperatures and withstand the stress of frequent gear shifts and engine operations.
Bearings produced for EVs, on the other hand, must meet the demands of high-speed electric motors while performing in the environments of electric and hybrid powertrains. They must offer superior performance at high rotational speeds while minimizing energy loss due to friction and heat generation.
And because EVs are much quieter than gas powered engines, operators are more likely to hear any minor imperfections in bearing performance. This has pushed manufacturers to produce quieter, ultra-precise bearings. Advanced materials, such as ceramics and composites, are increasingly being used in their production.
Another key development is the integration of smart technology. Bearing manufacturers are incorporating advanced sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) devices to monitor the performance and health of automotive bearings in real time. This data-driven approach allows for predictive maintenance, ensuring that any issues are addressed before they lead to failures.
Finally, today’s automotive bearings must offer longer service life, higher load capacities, and greater reliability. These increased demands have elevated the importance of precision engineering and manufacturing.
That’s where we come in.
Sirois Tool was built on a foundation of toolmaking. We’ve been manufacturing ultra-high precision tooling, gages and fixtures for almost 65 years for the bearing industry. It was the very first industry we served and is still a major focus of our business today.
Whether you’re ready for production or still in the design phase, we can help engineer and manufacture the tooling you need to efficiently manufacture the high-performance bearings necessary to sustain production of today’s EVs and other applications.
